Playing for a Purpose: LuxLiving’s Fundraiser for The Freedom 13

Playing for a Purpose: LuxLiving’s Fundraiser for The Freedom 13

It was a clear, warm day at McKenzie, LuxLiving’s newest development located at 8400 Delmar Blvd in St. Louis. Residents and guests gathered not just for basketball—but for a purpose much greater than the game.

The tournament marked LuxLiving’s first fundraiser for The Freedom 13, a nonprofit founded by the family of Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, one of the 13 U.S. service members killed during the 2021 Kabul airport attack.

In the wake of tragedy, Jared’s parents made it their mission to help other veterans and their families—creating a vision to build 50 recreational camps across 50 states, each with 13 homes, offering veterans a place to heal, rest, and reconnect. These retreats will feature hiking trails, fishing spots, UTV trails, fire pits, ADA-compliant homes, and access to programs like mental health support, job training, and service dog placement.

The Teams and Tournament

The competition took place on McKenzie’s court and brought out four teams ready to battle it out in support of the cause: BGB Elite, Creaky Squad, Just Ham, and the 2013 Miami Heat.

Each player donated $13 to play, honoring the 13 fallen heroes. Residents participated in a round-robin tournament along with classic competitions like Knockout, a three-point shootout, and LUX (a custom twist on HORSE). The games brought out a competitive edge, but the atmosphere remained rooted in camaraderie, respect, and community.

The Moment That Mattered Most

The highlight of the day wasn’t a buzzer-beater—it was hearing from Jared Schmitz’s father, who joined the event in person to speak with residents. He shared the story behind The Freedom 13, opening up about the pain of losing his son, and how that pain led to purpose. His words hit hard. Everyone listening knew they were part of something that mattered.

Why it Matters

For LuxLiving, this was more than a one-time event. It was the beginning of an ongoing partnership with a mission that aligns with their values—bringing people together, giving back, and building a stronger, more connected community.

It wasn’t about the scoreboard. It was about showing up. Raising awareness. Making noise for a cause that deserves it.

LuxLiving thanks everyone who came out, donated, played, or cheered from the sidelines. This is what community looks like—and it’s just the beginning.
